A maple common to North woods and higher elevations of the South; it grows in the shade of other trees. This tree blooms in June, when bees are built up enough to take advantage of the nectar flow, and can be the source of considerable nectar. Surplus honey can be collected from this tree, and was once regarded as a major honey crop in Northern Michigan.
